How to Check if You Have Car Insurance

Portland Insurance - Quoting Home, Auto and Commercial Insurance

December 16, 2021 By //  by Scott Leave a Comment

When you buy a car, it’s important to verify that you have auto insurance. You may be wondering if your car is insured and if payments are current but you aren’t sure how to check if you have car insurance.

It’s mandatory to be insured before hitting the road, and unfortunately, it’s not always easy to figure out. You need to make sure you verify that you have auto insurance and payments are current.

In most U.S. states, you’re required to show proof of insurance when you renew your license or car tag. The specifics will vary depending on the state, but in most instances, you’ll be asked for your insurance information when in an accident or traffic stop. If you’re unsure about whether or not your car is insured, it’s a good idea to find out — especially since you may need to show your proof of insurance in the future.

1. Check Online for Your Policy

If you, or your family, has used an insurance company before then look for the company’s website. If you know your email address, you can log in and review, update, or renew your coverage. If you don’t know the email associated with your account, you may be able to start by finding the company’s site online.

2. Look in Your Car

When you can’t find your car insurance, it might be in the glovebox. Most people keep a copy of their car insurance policy or card somewhere in their vehicles such as the glove compartment, center console, or storage compartments. That way, it’s always available in case of an accident or traffic stop. If someone else has been keeping up with your car insurance for you, chances are they may have placed your documentation in your car too.

3. Search the Motor Insurance Database (MID)

It’s easy to check if your car is insured in the Motor Insurance Database. Simply insert your Vehicle Registration Number and confirm that you read and understood the Data Protection Declaration. And, if you’re ever in a car accident, you can check if the other vehicle involved has valid insurance or not.

You can check the Motor Insurance Database here: https://ownvehicle.askmid.com/

4. Get a New Insurance Quote

Hmm. You’ve lost track of your current policy? When it comes to finding a new car insurance quote, you don’t have to give up hope. Most insurance agents can see if your old policy lapsed on an online report. If they find your old policy, then they’ll know which one it is.

Requesting a new quote doesn’t mean you’ve given up. When insurance agents look at your report, they can see which company your coverage is through. As long as your carrier shows up on the report (most do), the agent can tell you which one it is.

5. Ensure You’re Covered Properly

Even if you have car insurance coverage, you need to make sure it’s sufficient for your needs. It’s important to know what your car insurance covers so you don’t end up bearing horrendous costs in the event of an accident.

You can go through your policy documents or ask your insurance agent to talk you through your coverage. For a simple fast free rate comparison, just submit your info to us and we can look into your existing policy and new coverage options for you. We can look into potential car insurance discounts for you as well.
